Essence
Models fall into three classes: closed models available only through a provider's API; open-weight models you can download and run yourself; and on-device models. No model is best at everything: choosing is a trade-off between quality, speed, cost, privacy and context size. The market changes every few months, so knowing how to choose matters more than remembering names.
